Somali pronunciation for English speakers
Somali uses a Latin-based writing system, but several letters and doubled vowels do not behave like English. This guide gives you a careful starting point for reading the phrases on this site.

Foundation 01
Short and long vowels
Somali writes long vowels by doubling the vowel letter. Preserve that distinction when copying, reading, and practising.
a / aaA vowel may be written once or doubled. The doubled spelling signals a long vowel.
e / eeKeep the two written lengths distinct when reading and listening.
i / iiDo not drop the second letter: vowel length can distinguish words and forms.
o / ooTreat oo as a sustained vowel rather than two separate syllables.
u / uuThe doubled form should remain visible in your spelling practice.
Foundation 02
Spellings to notice
These spellings need special attention because English reading habits can lead you in the wrong direction.
- c
- A Somali consonant with no simple English equivalent. Avoid reading it as English c.
- x
- A distinct Somali consonant; it is not the English “ks” sound.
- q
- Produced farther back in the mouth than English k.
- dh
- Read as one Somali consonant spelling, not as separate d and h sounds.
- kh
- Read as one consonant spelling, commonly found in names and borrowed words.
