Somali Present Continuous Tense
Learn how to express ongoing actions in Somali using the present continuous/progressive tense.
The present continuous tense describes actions that are happening right now or are in progress. It is one of the most commonly used tenses in everyday Somali.
Formation
Verb stem + -ay- + personal ending + -aa
Example with cun (to eat):

Full Sentence Examples
Waan cunayaa bariis. — I am eating rice. Way cunaysaa canjeero. — She is eating canjeero. Way cunayaan qadada. — They are eating lunch.
Negative Present Continuous
Use ma + shortened form:
ma cunaayo — I am not eating ma cunaysid — you are not eating ma cunayo — he/she is not eating
Usage Notes

Waan imanayaa. — I am coming (now or soon).
