Somali Focus Markers: Baa, Ayaa, and Waa

Focus markers are one of the most distinctive features of Somali grammar. They indicate what element of the sentence is being emphasized or declared.
The Three Focus Markers

Waa — The Declarative Marker
Use waa for general statements:
Wuu yimid. — He came. (neutral) Waa fiican tahay. — It is good.
Baa/Ayaa — Focus Markers
Use baa or ayaa to emphasize the noun before the marker:
Cali baa yimid. — It is Cali who came. Aniga ayaa sameeyay. — I am the one who did it.
Word Order with Focus Markers
With waa: Subject + waa + (Object) + Verb
Cali wuu cunayaa bariiska. — Cali is eating the rice.
With baa: Focused-element + baa + (rest) + Verb
Cali baa bariiska cunaya. — It’s Cali who is eating the rice. Bariiska baa Cali cunaya. — It’s the rice that Cali is eating.
Waxaa — Formal Anticipatory Focus
